ABOUT DR. VELYVIS

Dr. Velyvis is a board-­certified orthopedic surgeon and hip and knee specialist who offers Bay Area patients the most advanced, minimally invasive surgeries.

He is the world’s leading expert on the robotic­-assisted partial knee resurfacing surgery and is a pioneering orthopedic surgeon who cares about decreasing downtime for his patients.

He studied biomedical engineering at Harvard, where he was also a member of the school’s elite rowing team. His four years of competition gave him a deep appreciation for human mechanics and body movement. At his practice, he focuses on giving patients back their mobility and quality of life.

Though he was fascinated by biomedical engineering, he couldn’t see himself settling down into the engineering lifestyle. He knew he wanted a career with more patient contact. With that in mind, he attended Columbia University’s prestigious School of Medicine and later completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital where he specialized in hip and knee surgery.

Now, he is passionate about offering patients the most advanced surgeries available. When he’s not directly treating patients at his office, Dr. Velyvis is often reading about the latest technologies and helping develop them with the world’s foremost biomedical companies.

Many of his patients come to him because they have heard or read that they might quality for a less­-invasive knee surgery than they are otherwise slated for. Dr. Velyvis is talented and skilled enough to offer his patients one of the most conservative and effective surgeries out there—the MAKOplasty®. The robotic-­assisted knee resurfacing allows him to preserve as much of the knee as possible and complete a surgery on an outpatient basis. His handheld smart tool can resurface the part of patients' knees that cause joint pain and degeneration; the technology is smart enough to leave healthy bone and ligament alone, while taking care of the arthritic parts.

Dr. Velyvis’ partial-­knee resurfacing helps patients experience shorter recovery times, shorter hospital stays and being to feel their joints move naturally more quickly than total knee replacement patients.

Personal Interests

When he’s not in the office, Dr. Velyvis loves spending time with his wife and their amazing son. Together, they enjoy exploring the world and traveling as much as possible.

In his free time, he enjoys staying fit. In his earlier life, he was on the rowing team at Harvard and a member of the US rowing team from 1990-­1996. His rowing years imbued him with a deep appreciation for body mechanics and the joy exercise and team sports can bring. The most fulfilling part of his practice is being able to deliver movement and a better quality of life back to his patients.

Dr. Velyvis’ training in biomedical engineering at Harvard University gives him the perfect background for an orthopedic surgeon capable of adopting the latest, state­-of­-the-­art technologies.
